Server migration from Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 to 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010

Hi All,

Am in the process of migrating my Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 to 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010

Prep AD for Windows 2008 R2

The first step of this process is to raise the Functional Levels of the SBS 2003 server. This involves raising the domain and forest functional level of Active Directory and the Operational mode of Exchange Server.

Raise the Exchange Operational Mode. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange > System Manager
  • Right click on the Organisation name right at the top of the list and select properties
  • In the dialogue box check the Operational Mode, if it says Mixed Mode click the Change Mode button and say yes to the dialogue box asking if you want to change to native mode

My Question is: Does the above task have any risks or will it cause any downtime if I run it while users are using the server.

Please note that am running both exchange 2003 and SBS 2003 with the latest service packs and updates.

Andy
