EWS ConversationID vs SMTP ThreadID

Hello,

I have a couple of questions regarding development of an EMAIL system to replace a SMTP Server with a new EWS system.

The current system identifies email threads using SMTP TreadID.

I’m planning on using EWS ConversationID for this same functionality.

The SMTP ThreadID is 30 characters, the EWS ConversationID is 80.

I see a couple of discussions talking about using ExchangeService.ConvertId(…) method to convert email IDs, but am not sure if this is something I need?

  • Are there methods that I can or need to use to convert 80 or 30 character IDs, or would it just be best to start the new system just using EWS ConversationIDs?

The model will be to have Exchange send emails to one email box.

A WCF Service will be using EWS to pull emails, process them, and delete them after processing.

  1. Anyone see issues using this model?
  2. Are there other ways I should use to identify email threads?

Thank you

Richard Loba
